La construction du théâtre de la Coupe d'or s'inscrit dans une période de renouveau du théâtre en France ; elle manifeste aussi les ambitions des notables de la ville.

Grâce aux plans et croquis de l'époque, on peut mieux comprendre l'architecture et le fonctionnement du bâtiment, dont la conception est fortement influencée par le modèle français du théâtre à l'italienne initié à Lyon par Soufflot. Grâce aux carnets de Toufaire, les répertoires de la fin de l'Ancien Régime et de la Révolution sont entrevus.

THE ROCHEFORT THEATRE IN THE 18^th CENTURY

The erection of the “Gold Cup” theatre in Rochefort coincides with a renewed interest for the drama in France as a whole. For the well-to-do people in town, it was also a means of giving vent to their ambitions.

Thanks to plans and sketches of the period, we can now get a better understanding of how things were organized within the building, whose architectural conception was widely influenced by the French rendition of the theatre à l’italienne, first introduced in Lyons by Soufflot. And Toufaire’s notebooks further enable us to get an insight of what the repertoires were like during the Ancien Régime and revolution periods.
